This is an Allegheny Valley RR GP18, that is heading through the Schenley Tunnel on its way downtown. I just happened to hear the whistle as I was heading through Oakland, and approaching the crossing. Grabbed the camera, and took this pic! Sorry about the smudges on my windshield! At this location, the Carnegie museum is on the left, and the CMU campus is on the right. Good thing I had my camera on the front seat! |

This is a shot of CSX's ex-Baltimore & Ohio Glenwood Yard, which is located in Hazelwood, just a few miles east of downtown. They used to have a locomotive and car shop here, but that was closed back in the 80s. Your eyes are not deceiving you. To the right of the white trailer, that *is* an ex- Chesapeake & Ohio caboose still in it's original paint! |
Another shot of Glenwood Yard. It's difficult to get good pictures of this yard because of its location. The only other places to take pictures is from the bridge heading out of town, and the bridge over the main line (towards downtown). The far end of the yard is surrounded by a high fence, covered in sheeting, making it difficult (if not impossible) to see a damn thing. |
This town is about 60 miles south of Pittsburgh. All of these were shot near the Norfolk Southern offices down there. This line was originally built as the Waynesburg & Washington, then Monongahela / Penn Central, then Conrail, and now NS. CSX trains also show up here frequently. Also common are Bessemer & Lake Erie hopper cars.
I've seen this gondola in various location. NS uses it to haul damaged ties and/or rail around. It's usually down by the spur on the other side of SR 218. Not sure why it's over here. |
Conrail built this little depot after the original W&W train station was torn down in the '80s. The W&W used to have a yard, enginehouse, power station, and various other industries down here. Most were closed long before this depot was built. The two white SUVs in the front of the depot are used to ferry crews around the area. |
This is one of the NS hi-rail trucks. They've been doing a lot of line work in the area, so this truck doesn't sit idle for long! I also saw a train loaded with welded rail, but I didn't get a pic of it :( Just out of the pic to the right is a B&LE hopper car. |
These are a few views of Bessemer & Lake Erie hopper cars. I've seen these same cars in CSX and Union RR trains in Pittsburgh! These all appear to be 100-ton hoppers, but I couldn't tell, since grime and paint obscures the load limit marks. |
McKeesport was located on the Baltimore & Ohio lines. It was a major steel town in the first half of the 20th century. But, the mills have closed, the railroad is gone, and much of the town is abandoned. However, in the last few years, it's slowly coming back. Many of the old mill buildings are being renovated, or cleared for development. McKeesport is also home to a preserved Penn Central passenger car, the Martha Washington.
After B&O moved all their trackage to the other side of town, all the crossing shanties were torn down. Except for this one. In the distance, you can just make out the large Camp Hill plant. Lysle Boulevard (aka the Main Drag) is 2 blocks away. |
I thought you'd like to see the other side of the tower. The town has made a little park next to the tower. |
Caught this coal train idling behind Oddo's hobby shop, near McKeesport. I just happened to be passing by, when I saw it. There's an alley which runs parrallel to the tracks. |
This is the trailing engine in the consist. They're pulling a group of B&LE coal hoppers, possibly to one of the power plants north of the city. |
Side view of #82. I think that this is a GE AC4000CW, but GE engines all look the same to me! |
Trackside view of #82. I wonder if the crew knew that I was taking their picture? |
Different train, similar engines. Big GE 6-axle power runs all over the place in PA. |
This was another slow-moving coal train that I was able to catch! |
Those vines appear to be growing on the side of the hopper, but they aren't. There's a pole there, that they've grown rather fond of. The crossing gate protects not a road, but a foot/bicycle path across the tracks. |
This one came out a little blurred, since the hoppers are actually moving. |
This is a close-up of B&LE's reporting marks. I'm still wondering if I've seen this hopper down in Waynesburg... |
